Description

Best practice suicide assessment and intervention has changed over the years, at great risk to psychologists who are not familiar with the current standards of care, research, and case law. Recent case law as well as current research has re-defined the psychologist’s responsibility and the “standard of care” in assessment, intervention, and mandatory reporting when it comes to issues of suicide.

These 2 workshops (total of 6 hours) will suffice to complete the mandatory requirement for licensed psychologists. The first workshop (scheduled on October 5th) will discuss demographics, intervention strategies, useful and weak techniques used by clinicians. The second workshop (scheduled on October 26th) will discuss what clinicians might do that is effective and how clinicians can more efficiently and safely deal with suicidal patients.

Objectives

Part 1 will address current research, ethics, case law, and standards of practice; defining risk factors including cultural considerations;  and suicide assessment including interview and assessment instruments.

Part 2 will address managing risk to both clients and to the psychologist; possible interventions including hospitalization, referral, ongoing therapy, and safety planning; and address appropriate and ethical documentation techniques.
