Course Description: This is a monthly reading and discussion course.
Virtually every application for psychotherapy today includes a high priority on “developing and
improving my relationships”. In the past three decades “Relational Psychoanalysis“ has focused
exactly on these goals. Rather than focusing on the traditional goals of Freud, Klein, Anna Freud
or Bion, the newer relational theorists and practitioners focus on the here and now of the
therapeutic relationship in order to study and help people transform their inadequate
transference-based relationship patterns. There are a variety of approaches as to how this task
might best be accomplished. This paper surveys those leading relational perspectives.
As part of the 2007 centennial celebrations of the International Psychoanalytic Association
Elisabeth Young-Bruehl and Christine Dunbar created a ten foot long flow chart with each foot
enumerating the major contributions of each decade to Psychoanalysis. The flow chart followed
five major traditions of Psychoanalysis: the Jungian, the classical Freudian, the Kleinian/Bionian
object relations, the Anna Freud ego psychology, and the Relational approaches.
Relational Psychoanalysis generally traces its beginnings to Sandor Ferenczi’s 1933 paper,
“Speaking in Tongues” in which he contrasts the Freudian oedipal/verbal interpretative approach
with preoedipal “passionate” preverbal interactive approaches. Freud harshly rejected this paper
and as a result Ferenczi’s diaries substantiating his approach were not published in English until

1988– the year in which Steven Mitchell published his landmark book on the relationship in Psychoanalysis.

As early as 1940 Harry Stack Sullivan had begun publishing his relational work with
schizophrenics which was followed up with what has become known as the Interpersonal
tradition including Eric Fromm and Frieda Fromm Reichman as well as Edgar Levinson and
more recently by Donnel Stern (2010, 2024). For many years the Interpersonal approach was
shut out of the American Psychoanalytic Association until 2020 when it was integrated as a
crucial part of the other American traditions.
Another relational approach has generally been spoken of as “self and other psychology”. It
traces its origin through the representational work of Sandler and Rosenblat (1962), through
Edith Jacobson’s interactional work (1964) to its significant contributor Margaret Mahler (1968)
and her supporter Otto Kernberg. Subsequently the self and other work of Lawrence Hedges
(1983, 2023) points to the four distinctly different relational potentials and transferences that can
be expected to mark the. relational potentials of Margaret Mahler’s four watersheds of early
relational development.This paper also surveys the Intersublective work of Robert Stolorow and

colleagues (1988), as well as the Relational work of Mitchell and his colleagues (1988) at New York university.

Relevance to Contemporary China:
All of these relational approaches now have been integrated into the American Psychoanalytic
Association as part of the progress of our field. It could be said that all of these modern European
and American relational approaches echo deeply the many ancient Chinese traditions of
relationships that are being overshadowed today by conditions in our contemporary world.

4. To succinctly describe Stern’s “unformulated experience.”
5. To assess how the clinical relationship can facilitate new understanding.
6. To learn the key ideas of the major contributors to the Relational Psychotherapy
movement.
7. To learn the history and applications of interpersonal and intersubjective psychotherapy.
8. To define exactly what is meant by “therapeutic symbiosis.”
Required Reading: The first two readings for every session are MANDATORY.
The third reading is OPTIONAL.
